One Month to Live by Kerry & Chris Shook

When a book reaches a major milestone, like 500,000 copies in print, you know it’s because it’s addressing a need in the body of Christ. One such book is One Month to Live: 30 Days to a No-Regrets Life (WaterBrook Press), by Kerry and Chris Shook.

Originally released in hardback edition on February 5, 2008, One Month to Live is now available on our website.

Authors pastor Kerry Shook and his wife, Chris founded Woodlands Church, near Houston, Tex. and host the TBN program “Kerry Shook Ministries.” The authors challenge readers to ask themselves this provocative question:

How would you live if you knew you only had 30 days?

“If you knew you had one month to live, you would look at everything from a different perspective,” says Kerry. “You would have total clarity about what matters most and you would drastically alter your life. Why don’t we live this way every day?”

New York Times bestseller, One Month to Live debuted as #3 on the Advice & Misc. list in February 2008. Also a CBA bestseller, it debuted as #11 on the Top 50 list in May of 2008. One Month to Live has been featured on “Fox and Friends,”USA Today, CNN, and The New York Times.

  • Change Your Words, Change Your Life by Joyce Meyer

Have you ever been so excited about a book that you couldn’t even wait until you finished it to write a review?

That’s exactly what’s happening right now. I’m only half-way through Joyce Meyer’s new book “Change Your Words Change Your Life”, which releases in September, 2012 and I’m ready to place my order, now.  I have seriously had to resist the urge to underline, highlight and write in the margins of the advanced proof I’m reading.

    Topics are…

    ·         The Impact of Words

    ·         Taming Your Tongue

    ·         Learning to Say What God Says

    ·         Staying Strong Through the Storms of Life

    ·         Words That Grieve the Holy Spirit

    ·         Words of Encouragement

    ·         Do You Really Have to Give You Opinion

…and so much more.   This is powerful stuff and told in Joyce’s straight-forward, tell-it-like-it-is manner.  I’ve already shared what I’m learning with others and they’re excited about this book, too.

  • Taking Time to Read with your Kids

Karen with James from KFLR Family LIfe Radio at the reading event today!

This morning Karen Powell and I had the opportunity to read books to two classes at West Valley Christian School.  We had a blast going into the classroom and getting to read to kids on their second day of school.  They are like sponges, and loved to hear the stories!  Reading to kids is so important and we have always read to our kids at home.  I have to let you in on a story that I just learned from my two oldest about some of the times I would read to them.

We are a homeschooling family and our tradition has been for me to read to them while they make lunch for us all.    My two oldest kids, Justin and Lauren, are now grown and married, and recently they  confessed  that when they were making the lunches, they would intentionally take longer so I would read longer.   I was totally unaware. . .  gotta love it!

So, read to your kiddos today and enjoy the time you have with them.  It opens a whole new world for them, and can be a great opportunity for the Lord to speak to their hearts about who He is and what He wants them to become.

    Enjoy the journey!!

  • Too Busy Not to Pray - Slowing Down to be with God, by Bill Hybels

Too Busy Not to Pray – Slowing down to be with God, by Bill Hybels

Let’s face it – our lives are too busy. Most of us have trouble finding time to slow down long enough to spend time with God. Between work, church, school, family and the myriad of errands and chores to be done, we barely have time to breathe, but after reading this book, I know that the only way to handle all that life demands of me is by taking time first thing in the morning to pray and spend time with God.

Too Busy Not to Pray is full of practical ideas to help us learn to slow down. Bill Hybels shares from his own life the hard discovery that prayer doesn’t happen on the run and a deeper relationship with God doesn’t just develop on its own.

Written over 20 years ago, over a million copies have sold.  This classic on prayer has helped millions of people develop a vibrant prayer life. It’s been updated, revised and has two new chapters added.

If you could buy one book outside the Bible that would revitalize your Christian walk…this would be it!

  • When I Don't Desire God by John Piper

I've been in a bible study this summer with a group of ladies from my church.  We are working our way through, When I Don't Desire God How to Fight for Joy by John Piper.  I have to say at first, I was not thrilled with this book, but after several weeks of working through it and a lot of prayer, I have come to enjoy what John Piper is teaching in this book/DVD study.
I am learning to fight for the joy in every situation, and event that God plans for my life.  It isn't easy, but it is something to fight for.
    I have found this book to be a little challenging and at times I wanted to give up because it was causing me to have to think deeper than I wanted to;  then I was challenged by a blog of a homeschool Mom that helped me.  Here is what Marcia Somerville, author Tapestry of Grace curriculum wrote;
"I'm reading John Pipers, Gods Passion for His Glory in my quiet times these days. Recently, I read this quote of Mortimer Adler's thought in his How to Read a Book, which I though was so good for us to ponder.
[Adler] makes a passionate case that the books that enlarge our grasp of truth and make us wiser must feel, at first, beyond us. They must make demands on you. They must seem to you to be beyond your capacity. If a book is easy and fits nicely into all your language conventions and thought forms, then you probably will not grow much from reading it. It may be entertaining, but not enlarging to your understanding. It's the hard books that count, raking is easy, but all you get is leaves; digging is hard, but you might find diamonds.
Evangelical Christians, who believe God reveals Himself primarily through a book, the Bible, should long to be the most able readers they can be. This means that we should want to become clear, penetrating, accurate, fair-minded thinkers, because all good reading involves asking questions and thinking. This is one reason why the Bible teaches us, 'Do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature' (1 Cor 14:20RSV). It's why Paul said to Timothy, 'Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything' (2 Tim 2:7). God's gift          of understanding is through thinking, not instead of thinking. "
When it is all said and done, we should be willing and wanting to think deeper and this book has done that for me.
I challenge you to pick up a book today that will cause you to think and draw you closer to our amazing God.
It will change your life and your heart forever.
John Piper writes in his book,
" What is this internal change that come from "beholding the glory of the Lord?
It is the awakening of a new taste for spiritual reality centering on Christ.  It is the capacity for a new sweetness and a new enjoyment of the glory of God in the Word of God.  Therefore, nothing is more important for us in life than to "behold the glory of the Lord."
Let's find Joy today in all that God gives us...
    In His Grip,
        Karen Kary

Abby's story is one that I appreciate whole heartedly. I could not put this book down because on every page you could see God working and

moving in Abby's life. She has such a heart for struggling women, but was caught up in the lies of Planned Parenthood. Follow Abby in this

book as the people around her love and pray for her unconditionally. Watch God reveal the truth of His plan for her as she quits her job as

a Director at Planned Parenthood and trusts in Him completely. If you struggle with abortion, Abby will share with you her experience

with aiding women to the room for procedure and then after quitting, relentlessly praying for those women outside the clinic.

  • Daily Guideposts 365 spirit lifting devotions for Mothers

      Daily Reading from May 12

I sat looking out the church window. It was Mother's Day and I hadn't heard from my son. He's Forgotten, I thought, shifting uneasily in my seat. Of course my son and his wife have a very busy life. They are preoccupied. Still...Disappointment settled around me like fog as I listened to the minister's sermon.  "Mother's Day" is a time of love, he declared, " Don' t let the day pass without saying 'I love you' - children to your mothers and mothers to your children."

Mothers to your children. I sat up straighter. Why not? Why shouldn't I be the one to call? I picked up the phone the moment I got home. "Gary", I cried eagerly, " I am coming over to take you both out for a Mother's Day supper. I want to celebrate the wonderful children God gave me."

"Hey, Mom, I am glad you called", he answered. "We have been trying to reach you. We've already made reservations!" My depression was gone. That day turned out to be one of the happiest days I've ever had.

Lord, help me remember I can never feel sorry for myself when I am busy loving.  Doris Haase
